Even when we have time to plan a toast, most of us aren’t gifted in the arts of wordcraft enough to make it memorable. We’re only end up telling everyone they’re great in that awkward junior high love poetry sort of way. So, when you find yourself in a situation where words fail you, use the words of someone else. Here are some of the greatest holiday toasts to throw out at your next party or gettogether. Remember to keep it short and sweet, and if you have to start with a story, make it a good one. Don’t drone on.
Blessed is the season that engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.
- Hamilton Wright Mabie
In the New Year, may your right hand always be stretched out in friendship, and never in want.
- Irish toast
Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man.
- Benjamin Franklin
Here's a toast to the future, a toast to the past, and a toast to our friends, far and near. The past a bright dream; may our friends remain faithful and clear.
Here's to us all,
God bless us
- Tiny Tim's toast from A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens
Wishing you more happiness
Than all my words can tell,
Not just alone for Christmas
But for all the year as well.
May you never forget
What is worth remembering.
What is best
Of course, not every holiday event has to be a somber hug-fest. Sometimes people just want a laugh or two before calling it a night. Here a few just for laughs, or to liven things back up after some Debbie or Donnie Downer finishes the inevitable lament of 2016.
May all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions.
- Joey Adams
As you slide down the banisters of life, may the splinters never point the wrong way.
I would like to make a toast to lying, stealing, cheating, and drinking. If you’re going to lie, lie for a friend. If you’re going to steal, steal a heart. If you’re going to cheat, cheat death. And if you’re going to drink, drink with me.
If you can’t be merry at Christmas, then you can drive the rest of us home when we are!
- Mark Bromberg
Here's health to those I love and wealth to those who love me.
Stir the eggnog, lift the toddy, Happy New Year, everybody.
- Phyllis McGinley
