Thanksgiving Drinking Games

Thanksgiving Drinking Games

Thanksgiving is one of those holidays that many of us love and hate at the same time. The sentiment behind it is something I think we can all appreciate – connecting with family and giving thanks for all the blessings in our lives. Great in theory, but harder to pull off in practice.

Whiskey and Food Pairings

Whiskey and Food Pairings

We're all used to people gushing over what color of wine, goes best with what dish. On the other end of the spectrum, we have beer, which mostly pairs well with hamburgers, hotdogs, and pizza (and fireworks on the 4th).

Christmas Cocktails

It’s that season again, and chances are you will be entertaining at some point during the holidays. Or you may need to entertain yourself at one of those more boring parties with an open bar. Or maybe it’s been a long day of shopping or a night of hobnobbing at a dry party, and you need a drink to get over the trauma from the boredom, but you want to keep it festive, so a whiskey straight isn’t going to cut it. Whatever your reason, here are some great holiday cocktails to whip up.

Seasonal Pop Up Bars

Seasonal Pop Up Bars

We have all been to or at least head about bars and restaurants with crazy themes or a gimmick to get people through the door. Maybe the most well-known is the 20s style speakeasies all gussied up like a prohibition era bar, complete with a flapper on her iPhone. There are also your basic theme restaurants which are all over big tourist spots. Nashville has several “honky-tonks” around 2nd Avenue that look like a mix of saloons and cattle barns, sans the smell. We also have the big chains like Planet Hollywood and The Hard Rock Café in places like Vegas and L.A.

What kind of Thanksgiving are you expecting to have? Do your plans involve great food, catching up and bonding with distant family members, all followed by a football game. Or are you anticipating a lot of arguments over politics, that "weird" boyfriend or girlfriend who was unexpectedly invited this year, or another debate on whether or not Star Wars is better than Star Trek?

Blackout Tuesday

Blackout Tuesday

We’ve all heard of Black Friday—the day after Thanksgiving. But for those of us in the craft whiskey business, it's the Wednesday before, Blackout Wednesday, that kicks off the holidays.

4 Halloween Cocktails

Halloween is upon us once again, and soon so will all the parties that go with it. Once all the kids have crashed from their sugar high, the grownups can start the real party. Those of you without little ones can get the ball rolling a little earlier. You have the costume, the music, and all the awesome decorations to turn your home into a haunted mansion or asylum. Now all you need are the drinks to get the night going. Don't settle for a keg or regular shots. Take things up a notch with cocktails, and other Halloween themed spirits. Get it? Spirits. Never mind. Enjoy the alcohol.

Patriotic Toasts for Your Distillery to Share During July 4th Fireworks

Patriotic Toasts for Your Distillery to Share During July 4th Fireworks

So, we are coming up on another Fourth of July and are getting ready to celebrate the birth of our great nation, during one of the most divided periods in history. There really isn’t anything that is going to change that anytime soon. People are entrenched on their side and are unwilling to give an inch to the opposition under any circumstances. Arguing with friends, family, and neighbors at the backyard bar-b-que isn’t going to win over any minds, and will only ruin what could be a perfectly good evening with fine spirits and amazing food topped off with some dazzling fireworks.

Toasting Dad This Father’s Day

Toasting Dad This Father’s Day

Once again, it’s time for Father’s Day. The people who created this holiday really knew what they were doing by putting it after Mother’s Day. For one, it keeps mom happy. Second, Mother’s Day is more expensive. The gifts have to be more extravagant, the restaurants nicer, etc. Even the cards have more thought behind them and are fancier. This extra cost and effort can leave a kid’s wallet somewhat depleted once Father’s Day rolls around. All is not lost though.

4 Cocktails that are Perfect for Your Easter Meal

4 Cocktails that are Perfect for Your Easter Meal

There’s nothing like spending time with family. It’s great to feel loved and welcomed, and when you have a family to spend a holiday with, you are literally blessed. But the fact of the matter is when families get together; sometimes you need a little a little help counting those blessings.

St. Hair of the Dog’s Day

St. Hair of the Dog’s Day

Every holiday that has an alcohol inspired component to it also has the morning after coming right on its heels. Buying the whiskey or hooch is one thing, but the real price we pay is to the hair of the dog. Hangovers suck, even the mild ones. It doesn’t matter whether you’re hugging the porcelain throne or sitting in the way too bright morning light wishing your head would quit pounding. You just want it gone.

The Water of Life, or Whiskey if You’re Irish

The Water of Life, or Whiskey if You’re Irish

Saint Patrick’s Day is a fine holiday. Something about getting rid of snakes, and achieving sainthood. It’s probably quite an interesting story, but I always end up coming back around to what makes the day great – whiskey. Specifically, Irish Whiskey because green beer doesn’t cut it.

Inauguration Inebriation

Inauguration Inebriation

Well, the big day is here. Inauguration Day. Now we get to see the peaceful transfer of power from the president to president-elect of the most powerful and influential nation in history. Half of you will see this as a rollback of the progress made on many fronts over the last fifty years. The other half will see today as the first day of a brighter future where the shackles will have been taken off the economy, after nearly two decades of malaise, and prosperity will return to all. To each his own. Don’t let this day, and your views on it ruin your relationships.

Farewell 2016

Farewell 2016

It’s a safe bet that 2016 will go down in history as one of those years everyone will say they want to forget as they talk non-stop about how bad it was to their friends. No doubt there will be endless toasts celebrating its demise this New Years. 2016 had its moments, that’s for sure, but why do we hate it so bad? There have been plenty of worse years, and I’m not talking that far back in history like 1916, 1929-1945, or 1968. 2001 and 2008, 09, and 10 were far more difficult years than 2016. So why the hate? Because we need the catharsis.

The Best Craft Spirits for Holiday Gifts

The Best Craft Spirits for Holiday Gifts

With the demise of Turkey Day, the official start of the holiday season is upon us. It doesn't matter if you call it Christmas, Yule, Hanukah, Kwanza, Festivus, or just another Sunday. It's also time for a little shopping. Some of it will be easy. There are our casual acquaintances and coworkers who we will buy gift baskets full of meat and cheese or sweet soaps, and maybe the kids (our own or nieces and nephews) who will want toys, or gift cards if they're teens. What about your real friends and your closest grown up family members? For them, you should get something that they will enjoy and remember.

The Best Drinks for Thanksgiving

The Best Drinks for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving dinner is less than a week away, and before we know it, we will be surrounded by our families enjoying a nice turkey dinner. All jokes about family drama and the real bits that actually happen aside, most of us look forward to this yearly tradition.

Get Ready for One of the Biggest Drinking Nights of the Year

Get Ready for One of the Biggest Drinking Nights of the Year

For those of us in the craft distillery biz, doing an extra bit of “product testing” on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is just one of the perks of the job. We aren’t the only ones wanting to do a little celebration though, or even a drink or two to forget. It’s an overlooked tradition that might be important for your distillery.
